James McDonald was born in Stirling and studied at Edinburgh College of Art, completing a post graduate degree in 1979. His work reflects his time at Edinburgh College which placed so much emphasis on technical draughtmanship techniques in both painting and printmaking.
His paintings have an 'Old Master quality about them which makes simple everyday objects come to life on the canvas. He achieves amazing effects of shadow and depth with an immense detail and precision, in still life compositions and portraits.
