Inspired by the Scottish Borders, over the past two years, Sandra has transitioned from black-and-white bird paintings to exploring the rich colours and textures of these hills. Sandra’s work captures the balance of openness and weight in the land, shaped by both nature and human presence.
Years of hiking and running have given her an intimate understanding of these landscapes - the shifting light, the variety of textures, and the sense of solitude they offer. Each painting is built from hours spent walking, sketching in all weathers, and returning again and again to absorb the land before translating it onto canvas.
Sandra uses water-based oil paints, embracing sustainable practices by reusing pigment sediment in her foundation layers - echoing the natural processes of erosion and renewal. She aims to capture both the physical and emotional experience of being in these spaces, reflecting the deep human connection we have with the landscape.
